    Mohamed Ali Marouani

Biography: Mohamed Ali Marouani is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Sorbonne Institute of Development Studies and a member of the “Development and Societies” research lab, of which he was the director until 2019. He is also a Research Fellow at the Economic Research Forum (ERF), a research associate at DIAL (IRD and Paris-Dauphine) a founding member of the Research Initiative on the Economics of the Middle East, launched by four European universities (Edinburgh, Oxford, Sciences Po, and Sorbonne), and a member of the Institut Convergences Migrations. Between 2019 and 2024, Mohamed Ali served as the Resident Representative of the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and the International Center for Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD) in Tunisia. During his tenure, he led several research projects, including “The Changing Nature of Work and Inequality” in collaboration with the United Nations University (UNU-WIDER) and “Covid Resilience (CORES)” on the vulnerability of enterprises in developing countries to the impact of Covid (ANRS). Additionally, he co-directed a program to support and promote sustainable scientific innovation in Tunisia (APIS), which has launched several projects addressing significant challenges such as sustainable water resource management, wetland and coastal zone conservation, fire risk anticipation, and plant biomass valorization. Mohamed Ali has also been a Senior Scholar at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota (2018-2019) and has lectured at various institutions in France (ENA, IIAP, Sciences Po), Europe (Munich, Turin), and the MENA region (Beirut, Cairo, Tunis). He served as an invited expert at the OECD (2007-2008) and worked as a program officer at the International Development Research Center in Dakar (2004-2006). Throughout the last two decades, his work with international cooperation agencies has included public policy evaluations across a wide range of African and Asian countries. His research focuses on the socio-economic impact of policies and crises, the structural transformation of economies, and migration in crisis time.
